We visited Keller’s burgers in Dallas this past week. My wife had been eyeing their burgers for a while now based solely on the poppyseed buns they use. The place is charming enough, you can see the building above. What you can’t see is several covered awnings you can park your car under. A car hop will come to your window, take your order and then deliver the food to you once it’s ready. It’s quite a nice little throwback. But...there were a couple things: the car hop really shouldn’t hop. She looked to be pushing 75 and was no nonsense. A review online said she looked tired, and although I have no idea if we were waited on by the same elderly woman, this woman fit the description. The burgers were good but not great, though their sides delivered: I had tater tots and my wife had onion rings. Both were very good. The prices were good too, a burger came in under $5 and we ordered the ‘No. 5 Special’ that came with double patties and optional grilled onions. The place wreaked of old school hole-in-the-wall charm, but the actual burger and service was a bit lack luster. I’d give it a “Hm.”

All Things Summerween
The time is now, now is the time! The Summerween holiday is officially underway, although it’s been sort of cloudy and rainy for the past few days here in Texas. Very unusual for this time of year, but that’s not keeping us from finding a new burger stand to try out or thinking about what scary movie to watch next.
This week I dropped the official playlist for this year’s Summerween. Listen to the playlist on Spotify here. And visit my official post on Patreon to read through all of the track listings and how/why each song go chosen!
All Patreon Members will be getting a physical CD of the playlist sent to their mailboxes this month. If you want one, join us over on Patreon and I’ll get it in the mail before the end of June.
Next up, is this year’s sticker sheet in all its bloody greatness. Again, Patreon Members will get this via snail mail soon, but I’ll also have some available to purchase up in my Etsy shop in the next week or so as well.
Last but not least, this week we’ll start reading the first graphic novel of the Summerween Book Club: Afterlife with Archie. If you’re joining us for the book club, grab your copy and read it by this time next week. I’ll be reading it as well and will post my review by Friday or Saturday. You can read what I thought of it, and share your thoughts in the comments of that post.
What’s Making Me Happy This Week?
Austin Kleon’s new book Don’t Call It Art! is out now, and I already have my copy! I’m taking my time reading it though. It’s a quick read but is packed full of wisdom, quotes and anecdotes. It’s a book that’s read best in small chunks, taking in one or two ideas at a time and letting them simmer and process in the back of your mind. I’m also reading through some essays of Ralph Waldo Emerson, namely Compensation, Self Reliance, and Nature. These two authors are more alike than you’d think, especially when it comes to thinking critically and creatively. Emerson is also one of those authors who posits brilliance one or two sentences at a time and you need to set the book aside and digest things for a bit. It’s a pleasure to sift through these two books slowly, picking out the gold nuggets found therein and think about what and where I can employ them in my own life and creative practice. It’s like studying, but fun.
That’s it for this week’s newsletter you guys! I hope everyone’s doing well and your summers are off to great start. As always, thanks for reading and I’ll see you all back here next week!
